Count Josh Kelley a fan of Napster. The Augusta, Georgia native was writing songs on the side as a student at the University of Mississippi, and in a happy Internet accident some Napstered MP3s of his work made their way to an A&R rep for Hollywood Records. Kelley eventually signed with the label, and his debut album For the Ride Home appeared in June 2003. It took awhile for it to build up steam, but eventually listeners starting responding to Kelley's affable, John Mayer-ish sound. "Amazing" did well as a single, landing on the soundtrack to the Kate Hudson romantic comedy Raising Helen and setting up a February 2004 re-release of Ride Home that included a bonus disc with acoustic performances and two unreleased songs. Kelley returned in August 2005 with Almost Honest. It featured the single "Only You," which he co-wrote with pop hitmakers the Matrix. ~ Johnny Loftus, All Music Guide

Singer/songwriter Melissa Ferrick emerged in 1994 as part of a group of new female alternative singer/songwriters, much in the vein of Liz Phair. Ferrick began singing in coffeehouses after dropping out of college, eventually winding up in Boston. Her major breakthrough arrived one night when she replaced Morrissey's opening act less than an hour before showtime. Ferrick's performance impressed Morrissey and he invited her to open for him during the rest of the tour. The tour earned her a small cult following as well as a contract with Atlantic Records. She released her debut album, Massive Blur, in 1994 to good reviews; the critical reception for her stripped-down second album, Willing to Wait, earned even stronger reviews. Everything I Need followed in 1998, and in early 2000 Ferrick returned with Freedom. Capturing her enigmatic stage persona, Ferrick issued Skinnier, Faster, Live at the B.P.C. in early 2001. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide |
Peter Krimmel (piano/vocals), Robby Garza (bass), Bryan Garza (vocals/guitar), and James Krimmel (drums) comprise the flirty indie rock band Scissors for Lefty. Part Brit-pop and part indie rock, and with a campy persona and dreamy lyrics to match, Scissors for Lefty are a great addition to the post-punk revival of the new millennium. They have played shows with the likes of Grandaddy, the Coral, Mary Timony, Pedro the Lion, and Diamond Nights. They self-released their debut album, Bruno, in 2005. A performance at the annual South by Southwest conference in Austin, TX, followed in spring 2006. ~ MacKenzie Wilson, All Music Guide |
